A busy week in London for international superstar Patricia Cornwell, first The Times HQ event on Nov 19, then the Waterstones Piccadilly evening on Nov 20, and the BBC News Entertainment interview, and I believe she has another event scheduled for Nov 24 at May Fair Hotel.

The Scarpetta books are all stand-alone forensics thriller adventures, but to follow character development of the protagonist Dr Kay Scarpetta and the other key players such as Lucy (niece and child prodigy) and Marino (detective), I would suggest reading the 22 novels in chronological order for first-time readers. And given the advance in DNA technology since 1990, when reading these books, we keep in mind the year a particular Scarpetta thriller was written/published. To the question: ‘Do you have a favourite Scarpetta book?’, Patricia answered her audience that the new book, Flesh and Blood (#22), actually is her favourite. That’s an interesting answer to many fans who have followed this series since the debut Postmortem in 1990.
The schedule on the night was tight, but I got the opportunity to ask Patricia my most important question, a question that actually resulted in a mini-dialogue with the superstar [where words are not literally reproduced, quotation marks are omitted]:
Q: “As a scientist myself, I have a particular interest in your research. You’re one of many writers known for doing meticulous research. Some of these writers [living or dead], such as Michael Crichton or Clive Cussler [or James Rollins, my mind added later], often extrapolate from established science into the realm of science fiction or outlandish adventure plots. Is that something that you have ever considered doing or may consider doing in the future?”
Patricia, smiling: Today I don’t think I would feel comfortable writing that kind of books. Maybe I would consider it in the future (?). “What kind of scientist are you?”
“PhD is in physical chemistry,” I said. [I kept my response intentionally brief.] Then I added: “I’m certain that Kay Scarpetta has read plenty of chemistry.” [In forensic medical sciences, there is a lot of chemistry, including biochemistry, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry.]
Patricia, smiling again: “You two could exchange letters.”

An example – from the 2nd Scarpetta thriller, Body of Evidence: How forensic science is associated with chemistry and/or solid state physics (there is, in fact, a branch of forensic science called forensic chemistry):
Chapter 4: The laboratory worker Joni Hamm tells Scarpetta that salt (table salt; IUPAC name: sodium chloride; chemical formula: NaCl) was found at the scene of a murder.
Now how do we know that the grains we’ve found are NaCl? There are several techniques and approaches we could apply (sometimes in combinations) in order to get the answer, derived from obtained physico-chemical parameters and properties associated with NaCl. For example: X-ray crystallography to determine the crystal structure; thermal conductivity; ion selective electrodes (electrochemistry); measurements of substance melting point, boiling point, refractive index, solubility in water and/or in other solvents.

Min fråga: "Som vetenskapsman har jag ett särskilt intresse för din research. Du är en av många författare som är kända för att göra noggrann research. Några av dessa författare [levande eller döda], till exempel Michael Crichton eller Clive Cussler [eller James Rollins, adderade min tankegång senare], extrapolerar ofta från etablerad vetenskap till science fiction och/eller besynnerliga/udda handlingar i berättelser. Är det något som du någonsin har övervägt göra, eller kan tänka dig att göra i framtiden?"
Patricia, leende: Idag tror jag inte att jag skulle känna mig bekväm med att skriva den typen av böcker. Kanske skulle jag överväga det i framtiden (?). "Vilken typ av vetenskapsman är du?"
"Doktorsexamen är i fysikalisk kemi", sa jag [svaret avsiktligt kortfattat]. Jag tillade sedan: "Jag är säker på att Kay Scarpetta har läst massor av kemi." [I rättsmedicinska vetenskaper förekommer en hel del kemi, inklusive biokemi, oorganisk kemi och fysikalisk kemi.]
Patricia, igen leende: "Ni två skulle kunna utbyta brev."

Hur vet vi att kornen som vi har hittat är NaCl? Det finns flera tekniker och metoder vi kan tillämpa (ibland i kombination) för att få svaret, genom erhållna fysikalisk-kemiska parametrar och egenskaper som förknippas med NaCl. Till exempel: röntgenkristallografi för att bestämma kristallstrukturens parametrar; värmeledningsförmåga; jonselektiva elektroder (elektrokemi); mätningar av ämnets smältpunkt, kokpunkt, brytningsindex, löslighet i vatten och/eller i andra lösningsmedel.
